The picture painted by the 2003 matriculation results, is a somewhat disturbing one.

More so when one considers that entrepreneurs without matriculation (Gr.12) exemption employ on average 0.7 people, compared to 3 people for those with Gr. 12.
The fact that those with a Grade 12 level of education are significantly more likely to progress a new venture past start-up phase, furthermore emphasises the role that education plays in a country’s economy.

Coupled with President Thabo Mbeki’s call for development efforts to be focused on educator training, the need to develop innovative new learning strategies and to utilise new technologies to deliver relevant learning is clear.

THESE NEW STRATEGIES WOULD HAVE TO:

- Provide for the acquisition of skills and
  knowledge vital to South Africa’s social and
  economic future;
- Use technology (ICT) to assist in
  delivering learning programmes;
- Increase affordable access and improve
  the quality of learning;
- Provide highly relevant learning
  programmes;
- Be measurable.
